How It Works: Treatment Stages

Water passes through the following stages in order. Each stage is arranged to protect the next one:

1. Washable sediment filter: Traps sand, silt, rust and coarse suspended solids at the first stage. The cartridge can be removed, rinsed and reused, which lowers running costs on water with heavy sediment.
2. Automatic resin softening (ion exchange): Calcium and magnesium ions that cause hardness are exchanged for sodium in the resin bed, reducing limescale in pipes, boilers, water heaters and fittings. When the resin is exhausted, the control valve regenerates it automatically with brine.

Choosing for Well Water

Besides hardness, well water may contain iron, manganese, turbidity and microbiological contamination. To choose the right stages, first measure your water hardness (how to measure water hardness) and ideally have a laboratory analysis done. Installation and Maintenance

• The unit is installed after the main meter together with a bypass valve; a drain line and power socket are needed for regeneration.
• Add tablet softener salt to the brine tank and check for salt bridging (salt usage).
• Once a year, service the valve, injector and brine tank and measure outlet hardness (water softener maintenance).
• Cartridges are usually replaced every 3–12 months depending on water quality and consumption; washable cartridges are cleaned periodically (when to replace a limescale filter).
