“Limescale treatment system” is an umbrella term for very different technologies. Some remove the minerals that cause hardness, others only try to change how scale forms. Knowing the difference is the most important step in choosing a system that actually works for your building.
1. Ion Exchange Water Softeners
Water passes through resin beads that swap calcium and magnesium for sodium. Hardness can be reduced to near zero and the result can be checked with a test kit. When the resin is saturated, the valve regenerates it with brine. This is the standard whole-house and whole-building solution. Details: water softening systems.
- Pros: real, measurable softening; protects the whole plumbing system; long life.
- Considerations: needs salt, a drain and power; must be sized correctly.
2. Polyphosphate (Siliphos) Filters
Polyphosphate crystals dissolve slowly and sequester calcium, delaying scale deposits on heating surfaces. They are inexpensive and need no power or salt, which makes them suitable in front of a single boiler, washing machine or dishwasher. They do not lower hardness and the cartridge must be replaced regularly. See limescale filter.
3. Magnetic and Electronic Devices
These devices claim to change the crystal form of calcium carbonate with magnetic or electric fields. Results reported in practice vary widely and depend on water chemistry, flow and temperature. They do not reduce hardness; we recommend them only where expectations are modest.
4. TAC (Template Assisted Crystallisation)
TAC media convert dissolved hardness into micro-crystals that stay suspended in water. They need no salt and no drain, but they do not lower hardness, are sensitive to iron, manganese and chlorine levels, and are less effective with very hard water.
5. Reverse Osmosis (Point of Use)
RO removes most dissolved minerals, including hardness, but is normally used only for drinking water under the sink because of its waste water and low flow.
Comparison Table
| Technology | Reduces hardness? | Salt / power | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ion exchange softener | Yes | Salt + power | Whole apartment, building, villa |
| Polyphosphate | No | None | Single appliance |
| Magnetic / electronic | No | Power (electronic) | Low expectations |
| TAC | No | None | Where a drain is not available |
| Reverse osmosis | Yes | Power (pump models) | Drinking water only |
Which System for Which Building?
- Apartment: compact cabinet softener at the inlet.
- Residential block: central softener sized by units and peak flow.
- Hotel, office, school: twin-tank, metered softener.
- Villa or well water: staged system with sediment, carbon, softener and UV as needed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which limescale system really works?
If you want measurable results, an ion exchange water softener. It is the only whole-house technology that removes hardness.
Are magnetic descalers useless?
Results vary with water chemistry. They do not reduce hardness, so they cannot replace a softener in very hard water.
Can I combine a softener with a filter?
Yes. A sediment filter before the softener protects the resin, and a drinking water filter after it improves taste.
