How It Works: Treatment Stages

Water passes through the following stages in order. Each stage is arranged to protect the next one:

1. Resin cartridge (softening): Cationic resin in a 10" cartridge captures hardness ions and helps reduce limescale. No salt or electricity is needed; the cartridge is replaced when saturated.
2. 5 micron sediment filter: Removes sand, rust, silt and particles larger than 5 microns, preventing early clogging of the following cartridges and tanks.

When Is It the Right Choice?

• When an economical pre-treatment is needed at an apartment or home inlet.
• When well water carries sand, silt, rust or odour; also as a protective stage before an automatic softener.

Choosing for Well Water

Besides hardness, well water may contain iron, manganese, turbidity and microbiological contamination. To choose the right stages, first measure your water hardness (how to measure water hardness) and ideally have a laboratory analysis done. If iron and manganese are high, suitable pre-treatment must be added before softening, as they foul the resin. Compare all options on our well water treatment systems page.

Installation and Maintenance

• Cartridges are usually replaced every 3–12 months depending on water quality and consumption; washable cartridges are cleaned periodically (when to replace a limescale filter).
