How It Works: Treatment Stages

Water passes through the following stages in order. Each stage is arranged to protect the next one:

1. Activated carbon unit: The large pore surface of activated carbon adsorbs free chlorine, bad odours, taste and some organic compounds. Backwashed tanks give long media life.

When Is It the Right Choice?

• As a pre-treatment stage before softening, carbon or RO systems.
• For high flow and low maintenance on well and tank water.

Choosing for Well Water

Besides hardness, well water may contain iron, manganese, turbidity and microbiological contamination. To choose the right stages, first measure your water hardness (how to measure water hardness) and ideally have a laboratory analysis done. If iron and manganese are high, suitable pre-treatment must be added before softening, as they foul the resin. Compare all options on our well water treatment systems page.

Installation and Maintenance

• Sand and carbon tanks clean themselves by automatic backwash; the media is replaced when it loses capacity over the years.
